  1. B-17 BOMBING MISSION
  2.  
  3. In the formative stages of the Eighth
  4. Air Force, U.S. air power advocates
  5. were hoping that the heavily armed B-17F
  6. would not need fighter escort during
  7. daylight bombing raids over Europe.  
  8. But even with all its armament, it was
  9. vulnerable to frontal attack and
  10. suffered heavy losses until the arrival
  11. of the P-51 long-range escort fighter.
  12. The B-17G incorporated a twin gun chin 
  13. turret to add more firepower to the nose 
  14. of the bomber.

  16.                     YOUR MISSION
  17.  
  18. You are the lead bomber in a formation
  19. of B-17s approaching the Deinze V2 
  20. Missile Site.  Enemy fighters will attack 
  21. your formation before you reach the 
  22. target, so defend your formation by
  23. jumping to the gunner positions as
  24. necessary.  
  25.  
  26. As you approach the target, turn on the
  27. Automatic Pilot to prevent accidental
  28. course changes.  Set the bomb release 
  29. timer using the Norden Bombsight.
  30.  
  31. As the leader, you are responsible for 
  32. timing the bomb release for your 
  33. formation.  The other bombers will wait 
  34. for you to release your bombs as a 
  35. signal to drop theirs.
  36.  
  37. If your bomber is damaged by enemy
  38. gunfire, watch your engines to be sure
  39. they're not running hot or smoking. 
  40. You may have to turn one or more
  41. engines off if you sustain heavy
  42. damage.

  45. your formation.
